Abstract(s)

O encerramento de uma unidade industrial que construiu um edifício próprio aquando do início da sua actividade, e que com ele cresceu ao longo de muitas décadas de laboração, é um momento especialmente delicado no que respeita ao destino das instalações. assim foi com a empresa industrial de chapelaria, fundada em s. joão da madeira na segunda década do século XX e encerrada na última década desse século. O edifício era, à data do encerramento, já apenas um objecto truncado, mas, ainda assim, de um interesse significativo. Neste artigo pretende-se dar notícia do processo de reutilização desse espaço, para aí instalar o museu da indústria de chapelaria, inaugurado no ano de 2005. The closing of an industrial unit, which worked inside a specific building for the period of its existence, is a problematic moment from the industrial heritage preservation point of view. that was the case of the empresa industrial de chapelaria, the main hat industry enterprise of s. joão da madeira (north of Portugal). that enterprise was founded in the early years of the 20th century and ended its activity during the last decade of that century. by that time, the original building did no longer exist as a complete piece but the remaining section was still a significant object in terms of industrial heritage. the main goal of this paper is to describe and comment the process of reusing that building to install the Hat industry museum.
