Abstract(s)
Anxiety is an increasingly Media issue today and it is a symptom that, although barely visible, has health implications, both physical and mental. In recent nursing graduates seeking their first job, the difficulty of insertion in the labor market and the nursing career itself are issues that, empirically, seem likely to cause anxiety. In Portugal, the number of studies addressing anxiety as a symptom in this specific group is reduced, so this research work aims to make a contribution to fill this knowledge gap. Therefore, the main goal of this study was to evaluate and compare the anxiety related to the work situation in recent graduates, nursing students and nurses, using as an assessment instrument the state-trait inventory of anxiety. This was a quantitative study of the comparative observational type with cross-section, in which a snowball sampling technique was used to evaluate whether the recent graduates actually had higher levels of anxiety compared to other groups in a more stable situation, namely, the nursing students of the 2nd and 3rd year, as well as the nurses in exercise of functions in clinical practice for at least two years. The results indicated that the recent graduates seeking the first job did not have higher levels of either state anxiety or trait anxiety compared to nursing students and nurses. Despite these results, it is important to be parsimonious in their analysis, since the samples under study were relatively small, not intended to be representative of the respective populations. Responding to the main objective of the study, there were no statistically significant differences between the anxiety levels of the group of recent graduates seeking their first job and those of the remaining groups studied. Still, the present study aims to draw attention and emphasize that it could be beneficial to prepare nursing students, throughout their academic training, for the difficulties they may experience in the transition to the labor market. At the level of future research, in addition to the specific area of Nursing, it would be relevant to explore this theme also in other areas of Higher Education.
