Abstract(s)
Introduction: Obesity is a serious public health issue, due to the lack of scientific evidence on the use of medicinal plants, which still generates distrust in health professionals, both at the time of prescription and counseling. Contributing to this is the existence of numerous medicinal plants and supplements marketed for the treatment of obesity and weight loss, with very different mechanisms of action. Objective: The main objective of this work was to review the mechanisms of action of medicinal plants in the treatment of obesity, based on integrative or systematic review articles with or without meta-analysis supported by scientific evidence of the plants mentioned by the authors. Finally, it was intended to know, based on the plants discussed in this dissertation, the medicinal plants and food supplements marketed in Portugal. Methods: The bibliographic research aimed to obtain articles related to the state of the art and systematic review, thus obtaining the plants referenced by the authors as the most used, with greater interest in weight loss and with greater scientific evidence. Research was also carried out on the mechanism of action of the 12 plants indicated, as well as the part of the plant with pharmacological activity and analysis of the results of the clinical studies analyzed by the authors in the authors in the scientific articles. Finally, online marketing platforms were researched to find out which products marketed in Portugal contain the plants studied. Results and conclusion: 12 plants were found with potential to be included in drugs or dietary supplements for the treatment of obesity. Most of the mechanisms of action are studied based on in vitro and in vivo studies. There has been a high scarcity of clinical studies to study the effectiveness of the same plants in obesity. Only 8 of the plants studied were found in food supplements marketed in Portugal and none are marketed as a medicine. It is notorious the lack of clinical studies that include medicinal plants with potential for the treatment of obesity and that can support the clinical decision and advice of food supplements.
