Abstract(s)
The purpose of this graduation project is to plan a scientific investigation to analyze the impact of social support (i.e., family, friends, and significant others) on the social reintegration of individuals with high psychopathy traits (i.e., boldness, meanness, and disinhibition). Psychopathic personality is a difficult concept to understand to which several preconceptions are associated that implicate the eventual success of interventions (Skeem, et. al., 2011). These individuals are perceived as unalterably dangerous, as well as insensitive, violent and impulsive, and as such, potential criminals (Skeem, et al., 2011). An in-depth understanding of the phenomenon of psychopathy will allow for better tailoring of intervention programs to the specific needs of these individuals. To this end, it is important to explore how psychopathic traits interact with the perceived need for social support in prison settings. Weakness in social support is directly related to increased severity of both physical and psychological symptoms of imprisonment (Andrews, Tennant, Hewson, & Vaillant, 1978; Barrera, 1981; Wilcox, 1981). The support network plays a key role in the process of social reintegration, since it is through it that all care is provided and received, acting as a barrier to situations of stress and emotional destabilization (Andrews, Tennant, Hewson, & Vaillant, 1978; Barrera, 1981; Wilcox, 1981). In methodological terms, this project presents a research proposal based on quantitative methods, with application in Northern Prison Facilities (i.e., Estabelecimento Prisional de Santa Cruz do Bispo - Masculino, Estabelecimento Prisional de Paços de Ferreira e Estabelecimento Prisional do Porto). The aim was to study the impact of the support network in the process of social reintegration in inmates with higher expression of psychopathy traits.
