| dc.description.abstract | O Seminário de Santa Joana Princesa apresenta-se como um dos edifícios mais intrigantes da cidade de Aveiro quer pela sua localização e orientação, quer pelas opções arquitectónicas, marcadamente de "Português Suave". Movido pela curiosidade descobri que este se tratava de um projeto da autoria dos ARS, um grupo de renome oriundo do Porto e responsável por obras de referência nacional no século XX, tais como o Palácio Atlântico, Mercado de Matosinhos e Mercado do Bom Sucesso, assumidamente modernistas. A incoerência e discrepância da linguagem e do método de projectar entre as obras já conhecidas e o Seminário deram origem a este trabalho que procura decifrar e entender o percurso do grupo, desde a sua criação até ao ponto de ruptura em que os três sócios desfazem a sociedade e põem fim aos ARS. A imagem do grupo de arquitectos, que a história da arquitectura portuguesa retratou e sedimentou, foi se definindo pelas palavras de vários autores ao longo dos anos em diversos registos historiográficos e críticos. Algumas desta ideias vão ser postas em causa e debatidas ao longo da tese e levantam questões pertinentes às quais procuro dar resposta sendo a mais ousada responsável pelo desenvolvimento de toda esta dissertação: terão sido os ARS realmente seguidores puros do Movimento Moderno na sua maneira de projectar e ver a arquitectura, como se intui em várias fontes, ou uma análise mais atenta e completa de todo o seu espólio terá algo de diferente a dizer-nos? | pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | The Seminary of Santa Joana Princesa stands out as one of the most intriguing buildings in the city of Aveiro, either for its layout and setting, or for its architectural choices, being a distinctive example of the "Português Suave" style. Moved by curiosity I found out that this was a design by ARS, a renowned architectural office from Porto, responsible for landmark Portuguese works of the 20th century, such as the Palácio Atlântico, the Matosinhos Municipal Market and the Bom Sucesso Market, clearly modern in taste. The discrepancy and incoherence between languages and design methods from the widely known buildings and the Seminary led to the development of this dissertation, an attempt to decipher and understand the work of this group, from its creation to the breaking point, when its members broke up their association and put an end to ARS. The image of this architectural partnership, pictured and sedimented by Portuguese History of Architecture, was gradually defined by the words of various authors, in several historiographical and critical texts, through the years. Some of these established ideas will be analyzed and questioned in the present dissertation, raising important questions and trying to supply some answers, the most relevant of them being the one that sparked this thesis: were the ARS really earnest followers of the Modern Movement, regarding the look and method of architectural design, as one might gather from multiple sources, or does a closer and thorough analysis of their records tell us something different? | pt_PT |
