Abstract(s)
The purpose of this study is to find some strategies that may help the students of specialized music teaching to develop skills that can enhance their autonomy when they learn on their own. When students try to develop these skills, they often feel discouraged as a result, which in turn leads them to sometimes leave specialized music education for good. In order to avoid this, this study conducts a reflection on several motivation theories, on the importance of developing metacognitive and autoregulatory skills when learning music and on the crucial role teachers and parents/guardians play in this process. Students of Escola Artística do Conservatório de Música de Coimbra were asked to complete survey questions in order to understand in detail how they studied on their own. When analyzing the survey results, it was found that there were many students - mainly the ones aged between 12 and 15 - that did not study regularly and systematically, a vital requirement that specialized music learning implies. As a result, students showed low motivation levels, and therefore we find it necessary to implement strategies that can prevent this situation. In this way, as a conclusion, we propose some strategies that may help students to study on their own in a more motivated, effective and autonomous way, as they try to overcome the obstacles in their educational process.
