Abstract(s)
Objective: To determine the prevalence of dental floss use in a group of children in France. Evaluate the perception of the need for flossing by caregivers and compare the oral hygiene habits of caregivers and their children. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study using an online questionnaire was conducted between November 2023 and early January 2024, targeting caregivers of children aged 6 months to 6 years. Results: The sample comprised 533 caregivers of French children, with 66.0% residing in Pays-de-la-Loire. Among these children, 46.9% were aged between 1 and 3 years. Regarding dental visits, 49.3% of children had never had a consultation, while 26.8% had seen a dentist within the last 6 months. Concerning children's oral hygiene, 46.7% of caregivers reported brushing their children's teeth twice daily, with supervision in 57.9% of cases and mothers performing the brushing in 83.5% of instances. Only 2.2% of caregivers did not supervise brushing. Among respondents, 25.3% used dental floss themselves, but only 2.2% used it for their children's oral hygiene. Among those who used floss on their children, 72.7% used it rarely, while only 27.3% used it daily. Additionally, 45.5% used dental floss before brushing, and the same percentage used it afterward. When asked about dental floss, 72.7% of caregivers found it easy to use. Among children who used dental floss, 95.1% had never had cavities. Conclusion: Despite most caregivers brushing their children's teeth twice daily and only a minority not supervising this activity, dental floss use is quite limited. The prevalence of dental floss use among children aged 6 months to 6 years in France was 2.2%, and among caregivers, it was 25.3%. These low prevalences suggest a lack of awareness of its importance among caregivers. There is a need for increased awareness of this practice to ensure better oral health for children.
