Abstract(s)
This dissertation intends to explore perceptions of portuguese youth to police authorities based on eight distinct dimensions (impartiality, effectiveness, respect, justice, dialogue, obedience, conformity and perceived legitimacy of the police) which may help to explain some youth behaviours. During the dissertation, a quantitative approach was selected and a questionnaire on antisocial behaviour for portuguese youth was used. This questionnaire came from the 3rd version of International Self-Reported Delinquency study (ISRD-3). The sample consists of 1131 individuals with its age between 16 and 21 years old and from the cities of Braga, Porto and Lisbon. The dissertation contains relevant results which are in conformity with the results found on ISRD-3 study. These results allow to demonstrate the applicability in the context where the study was carried out, through the usual theories in our studies of citizens' perceptions of the police, namely the Theory of Procedural Justice. From the study, it was observed that the perceptions of youth to police are associated to a set of factors such as: the commission of crimes, the number of crimes committed, contact with the police and the gender of young people. However, those perceptions are based on police behaviours and on the interaction between youth and police. All of this is based on the Theory of Procedural Justice, which argues that positive perceptions are linked to the compliance with the law and a lesser possibility of violation of values and social norms. At the end, results are discussed and related to the subject in which they were fetched. Some limitations which were found during the dissertation are exposed and some future work stated.
