  • Pilates e sono na gravidez

    Este estudo objetivou analisar a potencial influência da prática do Método Pilates na qualidade do sono de mulheres grávidas. A pesquisa envolveu 60 gestantes do Pará, Brasil, com idade média de 29,67 ± 5,59 anos, divididas em dois grupos de 30: praticantes de Pilates e não praticantes. Foram incluídas gestantes primíparas e multíparas entre as 13 e as 40 semanas de gestação. O grupo Pilates praticava regularmente há pelo menos dois meses, no mínimo duas vezes por semana. Dados sociodemográficos, qualidade do sono e qualidade de vida foram coletados via questionários validados para o efeito. Os resultados revelaram uma associação significativa entre a prática regular do Pilates e a qualidade do sono das grávidas, tal que: as praticantes de Pilates apresentaram menor prevalência de distúrbios do sono (6,7% vs. 30,0%, p = 0,008), menor disfunção diurna relacionada ao sono (10,0% vs. 50,0%, p = 0,001), e maior satisfação geral com a qualidade do sono (36,7% classificadas como boas dormidoras vs. 3,3%, p = 0,001) em comparação com as não praticantes. Concluiu-se que o Método Pilates pode ser uma intervenção eficaz para melhorar a qualidade do sono durante a gestação, sugerindo sua inclusão como prática recomendada no cuidado pré-natal. Este estudo contribuiu para a compreensão da relação entre exercício físico e qualidade do sono na gravidez, oferecendo perspectivas valiosas para profissionais de saúde e pesquisadores na área de saúde materna.
  • Relative energy deficiency in sport in young Portuguese gymnasts

    Objective: Research on energy-deficient athletic cohorts has broadened the concept of the Female Athlete Triad into the Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport syndrome, that represents a spectrum of abnormalities induced by low energy availability, affecting competing athletes, in particular gymnasts. The present study aimed to evaluate the nutritional status, body composition, including bone mineral density, of rhythmic and artistic gymnasts, during the competitive period. Methods: Data were collected using a questionnaire about sociodemographic data, training, food intake (3- non-consecutive days food record) and body composition (anthropometry, bioelectrical impedance and bone densitometry). All participants (n=59) provided informed consent. Statistical analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 27 for Windows. Main results: The athletes’ mean age was 12.0±2.8 years old and they trained 13.6±5.5 hours/week. They showed reduced body weight, height and body fat, and a high fat-free mass (37.0±9.8Kg; 144.9±12.4cm; 9.8±2.9%; 96.1±1.7%; respectively). Their bone mineral density estimated was 0.60±0.08g/cm², which doesn’t represent a risk to bone health. They showed an energy intake of 1370.0±454.2kcal/day and an energy availability of 35.8±15.9kcal/kg fat-free mass/day. Regarding the distribution of macronutrients, 62.7% were below carbohydrates recommendations, 67.8% exceed those of protein and 62.7% consumed fat according to the recommendations. In terms of micronutrients, vitamins D, E and K, and minerals’ consumption, such as calcium, magnesium and potassium were below the recommendations (13.9±6.2µg/day; 591.0±259.2mg/day; 165.2±51.0mg/day; 1920.4±618.6mg/day; respectively). Conclusions: Gymnasts revealed energy deficiency, as well as, low energy availability, which were reflected in their body composition. Therefore, nutritional education is urgent for gymnasts and all around them.
  • Estudo dos hábitos alimentares e da composição corporal de ginastas praticantes de ginástica artística inserido no estágio curricular em Ciências da Nutrição

    O controlo correto da composição corporal das atletas e a ingestão energética adequada devem ser monitorizados, de forma individualizada. O objetivo foi avaliar o perfil nutricional de ginastas, no âmbito do estágio curricular em Ciências da Nutrição, na Faculdade de Ciências da Saúde da Universidade Fernando Pessoa, Porto. Foram avaliadas individualmente 63 atletas de ginástica artística feminina (9,4±2,5 anos): i) recolha de dados sociodemográficos, rotina de treino, toma de suplementos e ciclo menstrual; ii) aplicação do questionário de Frequência Alimentar validado; iii) avaliação da composição corporal: peso, estatura, perímetros (cintura, anca, meio braço), pregas cutâneas (tricipital, bicipital, subscapular e supra-ilíaca); a massa gorda foi calculada a partir da equação da coautora MRS [MG (kg) = -2,545 + 2,610.PC/Peso + 8,695.10-3.PMB.P– 0,247.PMB]. Todas as atletas forneceram consentimento informado. Os dados foram tratados no SPSS. Apenas 20,6% atletas eram menarcadas, 81% treinavam 2-3 vezes/semana, 77,8% faziam 5 refeições diárias e o pai/mãe eram responsáveis pela sua alimentação. Quase 30% das ginastas apresentaram excesso de peso ou obesidade e 4,8% estava em situação de risco de diabetes e doenças cardiovasculares, considerando a razão cintura-estatura. A ingestão energética média foi de 2141,5±600,8kcal/dia e a de sódio foi 2,9-3,5 vezes superior ao recomendado. O valor energético total de hidratos de carbono esteve abaixo de 55% em 84,1% das ginastas, o de lípidos foi superior em 47,6% das atletas, e o de proteínas foi 19,5%. O consumo de cálcio e de vitamina D foi insuficiente na maioria das ginastas (49,2% e 100%, respetivamente), e 6,3% no ferro. Os resultados sugerem a ocorrência de erros alimentares e a redução do peso corporal indevida podem ser impulsionados por falta de conhecimento sobre nutrição. A educação alimentar e nutricional é crucial para a mudança de comportamento e implementação de escolhas saudáveis, e não restritivas.
  • The traveller gymnast: trends, myths and clocks

    Objective: To discuss the influence of biological clocks on traveling gymnasts. Methods: This conference reported on the scientific basis of the neurophysiology of biological rhythms and discussed associated factors such as travel, sleep, physical exercise and nutrition. Main results: The traveling gymnast is subject to the characteristics of the location, where they will compete and/or train, which can influence their daily routines and the functioning of their biological clocks with repercussions on their well-being and health general. In the case of athletes, who compete internationally, these aspects take on special relevance, given the possibility of crossing multiple time zones and the desynchronization of their biological rhythm. In this way, plan the athlete's trip appropriately and in a timely manner, considering their energy and nutritional needs, hydration, training, sleep and rest routines, which will allow them to better adapt to the new location and maximize their sport performance. There are several factors that must be considered during the gymnast's journey, namely age, sex, direction and number of time zones crossed, nutrition, dehydration, exposure to light, sleep-wake cycle, basal body temperature, melatonin production, physical exercise, and chronotype. Conclusions: Although jet-lag syndrome is benign, it can effectively break athletes' fashions and routines, negatively affecting their physical and mental health, as well as their sporting performance. It is necessary to educate athletes, coaches, parents and sports managers to fully prepare the athlete, prior to a trip related to a competition in order to avoid or minimize potential losses in sports performance, as well as, and firstly, a decrease in the health status.
  • Economic impacts of artisanal mining and environmental pollutants on food security in Southern Africa: a review

    Introduction: Environmental pollutants, including those from mining activities, have become a significant global problem, contributing to millions of deaths and economic losses worldwide, while posing challenges in occupational, environmental, and social domains. This issue is also a public health concern that impacts food security and, consequently, people’s health. Objectives: This paper aims to analyze the economic impact of environmental pollution from mining activities on food security in the Southern Africa region. Methodology: Published articles available in electronic databases (PubMed, SciELO, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar) from 2013 to 2023 were reviewed. The selected publications met the inclusion criteria, and the data were analyzed and synthesized into themes of interest. Findings: This region faces food insecurity despite its richness in natural resources. Artisanal mining is the main economic activity in some areas. The review highlighted mercury as the most used metal in artisanal mining, which has negative environmental impacts that affect agriculture and contribute to food insecurity. Gold is the primary commodity extracted in artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM), significantly influencing economic wealth. Conclusions and recommendations: Environmental pollution from artisanal mining has adversely affected agriculture and food security in Southern African communities. It is recommended to implement strategies to prevent environmental pollution in small communities where mining activities have a significant impact.
