- Interactive digital panel for oral cancer prevention: development and designPublication . Vu, Kha-My; Magalhães, Sónia; Lopes, OtíliaOral cancer remains a major global public health challenge, largely because most cases are still diagnosed at advanced stages. Traditional materials used in dental waiting rooms, such as leaflets and posters, often fail to engage patients or to provide clear, actionable guidance on early detection. This study aimed to design and develop an interactive digital panel to address this gap and to support proactive self-monitoring among diverse patient populations. Clinical evidence was integrated with UX/UI design principles following a multidisciplinary approach. The intervention was structured using the TIDieR checklist to ensure procedural transparency and reproducibility, while the reporting also drew on the general principles of the SQUIRE 2.0 guidelines. The tool was built on the Genially platform and features AI-generated watercolour illustrations intended to present clinical information in an approachable visual format. Strategies such as intentional friction and modular information layering were implemented to manage cognitive load. The final tool is a seven-module interactive platform that guides users from basic anatomical knowledge to practical self-monitoring and clinical referral. Iterative review by the academic supervisors confirmed its clinical accuracy, pedagogical coherence, and emotional safety. A multilingual framework — Portuguese, English, French, and Spanish — supports accessibility across linguistically diverse populations. This study suggests that interactive digital media can turn the clinical waiting environment into a meaningful educational opportunity. The prototype provides a scalable, evidence-based foundation for improving early detection rates and strengthening health literacy in preventive oncology.
- Socket shield technique versus immediate implant placement with guided bone regeneration in the esthetic zone: a systematic reviewPublication . Vieira, Fabrício; Pereira, JorgeImmediate implant placement with guided bone regeneration (IIP + GBR) has been established as the clinical standard for preserving tissue architecture in the esthetic zone. However, the Socket Shield Technique (SST) offers a biological alternative, maintaining the buccal root fragment to preserve periodontal vascularization in order to reduce physiological remodeling. Objectives: To compare hard tissue dimensional changes, esthetic outcomes, patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), implant survival, and complications between SST and IIP + GBR in the esthetic zone through a systematic review. Methodology: Following PRISMA guidelines, English-language articles were searched in PubMed, Web of Science, and EBSCO databases up to March 2026, with the protocol registered in the PROSPERO database (CRD420261349142). Two independent reviewers screened titles/abstracts and confirmed inclusion based on full texts. Methodological quality was assessed using the Cochrane RoB 2 tool (randomized controlled trials - RCTs) and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (observational studies). Results: Twelve studies were included in the qualitative synthesis (eight RCTs and four cohort studies). Both techniques demonstrated excellent implant survival rates. SST exhibited superior or equivalent capacity in maintaining buccal bone plate dimensions compared to IIP + GBR. Although both achieve short-term esthetic excellence, SST provided better long-term esthetic stability (Pink Esthetic Score) and higher patient satisfaction. However, SST presented a distinct complication profile, including root fragment exposure, mobility, and migration, strongly associated with high technical sensitivity. Conclusions: SST is a clinically viable and potential biological alternative to IIP + GBR, which may offer more favorable long-term esthetic stability and buccal bone preservation. Nonetheless, its applicability is currently limited by a complication profile that demands technical precision, as well as by the lack of consolidated standardized surgical protocols. This reinforces the need for standardized RCTs with longer follow-up periods to establish solid clinical guidelines.
