Diabetes mellitus é um fator de risco para o desenvolvimento da gengivite e/ou periodontite, tanto nos diabéticos tipo 1 como nos diabéticos tipo 2. A doença periodontal, quando presente, pode agravar o controlo glicémico nestes doentes.
O objetivo deste trabalho é rever de forma detalhada a literatura relativa à relação entre a diabetes mellitus e a doença periodontal, descrevendo os mecanismos através dos quais estas duas patologias se influenciam mutuamente.
Realizou-se uma revisão narrativa da literatura na base de dados PubMed até dezembro 2020. Critérios para inclusão: artigos completos respondendo a palavras-chave em combinações, revisões e trabalhos listados em sites de referência (Pubmed) em língua inglês e português, estudos realizados sobre humanos e animais.

Periodontal disease, when present, can worsen glycemic control in these patients. The aim of this paper is to review in detail the literature on the relationship between diabetes mellitus and periodontal disease, describing the mechanisms through which these two pathologies influence each other. A narrative review of the literature was carried out in the PubMed database until December 2020. Inclusion criteria: complete articles answering keywords in combinations, reviews and works listed on reference sites (Pubmed) in English and Portuguese, studies carried out on humans and animals.
