Abstract(s)
O uso terapêutico da canábis decorre da utilização de compostos químicos específicos encontrados na planta Cannabis sativa, conhecidos como canabinoides. Os canabinoides mais estudados atualmente são o delta-9-tetrahidrocanabinol (Δ9-THC) e o canabidiol (CBD), que possuem efeitos distintos no corpo humano. O crescente interesse na utilização de canabinoides para fins medicinais tem despertado atenção para suas possíveis aplicações na Medicina Dentária. Algumas das indicações terapêuticas atuais da canábis incluem espasticidade associada à esclerose múltipla ou lesões da medula espinhal, náuseas e vómitos resultantes da quimioterapia, radioterapia e terapia combinada para tratamento da infeção pelo vírus da imunodeficiência humana (HIV), estimulação do apetite em doentes oncológicos ou com a síndrome de imunodeficiência adquirida (SIDA), dor crónica associada a doenças oncológicas ou ao sistema nervoso, síndrome de Gilles de la Tourette e epilepsia. Esta revisão crítica da literatura visa fornecer uma visão abrangente das potenciais aplicações terapêuticas dos canabinoides na medicina dentária, que incluem a higiene oral e prevenção da cárie dentária, terapia pulpar, terapia periodontal, analgesia orofacial, tratamento do cancro oral/cabeça e pescoço, e ansiedade associada à consulta de medicina dentária. Além disso, investiga os recetores canabinoides presentes na cavidade oral e apresenta as patentes relacionadas ao uso de canábis e/ou canabinoides na medicina dentária. No entanto, apesar do presente trabalho fornecer evidências promissoras sobre o potencial terapêutico dos canabinoides na medicina dentária, são necessários mais estudos clínicos robustos para validar as suas aplicações e determinar a segurança das mesmas.
The therapeutic use of cannabis stems from the utilization of specific chemical compounds found in the Cannabis sativa plant, known as cannabinoids. Currently, the most studied cannabinoids are delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), which exhibit distinct effects on the human body. The growing interest in the use of cannabinoids for medicinal purposes has drawn attention to their potential applications in Dentistry. Some therapeutic indications of cannabis include spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injuries, nausea, vomiting (resulting from chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and combined HIV therapy), appetite stimulation in cancer or AIDS patients, chronic pain associated with oncological diseases or the nervous system, Gilles de la Tourette syndrome and epilepsy. This critical literature review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the potential therapeutic applications of cannabinoids in dentistry, including oral hygiene and caries prevention, pulp therapy, periodontal therapy, orofacial analgesia, oral/head and neck cancer treatment, and anxiety related to dental consultation. Additionally, it investigates cannabinoid receptors present in the oral cavity and presents the patents related to the use of cannabis and/or cannabinoids in dentistry. However, although the present work provides promising evidence regarding the therapeutic potential of cannabinoids in dentistry, more robust clinical studies are needed to validate their applications and determine their safety.
