Abstract(s)
Imprisonment is a period of deprivation of liberty that results from criminal practice, having a resocializing nature. In this sense, prisons are responsible for ensuring all the necessary conditions during this period for the reintegration of the condemned in society. This dissertation focuses on the main characteristics of the Portuguese prison system, namely, the feminine prison establishment of Santa Cruz do Bispo, and its resocializing role from the prisoners' point of view. The main objective of this work is to understand the benefits and positive contributions made available by the EP for the re-education and re-socialization process, as well as to identify its possible needs and flaws. The intention is to analyze the representations of this population about their experience in the prison system and future perspectives regarding the return to life in society, based on 50 interviews and the understanding of the tools they have available to assist in this process, as well as to identify the limitations and difficulties in order to find possible solutions for the improvement of this system. One of the findings was that the prisoners consider the role of resocializing in the completion of the prison sentence to still be ineffective. The punitive role that has long lost ground in this issue continues to be due to the failure of reeducation and the tools available for resocialization. Precarious remuneration, unskilled work and lack of initiatives to promote re-education are seen as obstacles to the objective of prison sentence. The development of work in order to re-socialize the prisoner is necessity to fight criminal recidivism, for this the participants believe in the importance of specialized professional training, the creation of an environment as close as possible to the outside one, the participation of the entire prison population in rehabilitation activities and programs, increasing human resources in order to enable them to carry out their functions, ongoing psychological monitoring and division of physical space, in order to prevent the negative effects of the contact of prisoners with different criminal statuses.
