Abstract(s)
As mães
This monograph deals with the theme "Life beyond cancer: what parents feel" and aims to explain the changes that occur in the lives of the parents of these children during their hospitalization, separation from the family, feelings experienced, the support of family members, friends and parents of other children in the same situation, non-career progression and the support of health professionals, especially nurses. An exploratory-descriptive study was developed, inserted in a qualitative approach, using a probabilistic sample of convenience constituted by mothers. The method of haverst collection used was the semi-structured interview with mothers housed in the Ronald Mcdonald Children's Foundation. For the treatment of the collected data the recording and later transcription of the interviews was used and later presented by tables. It is concluded that the main experiences of the parents of hospitalized children are: revolt and sadness and to a lesser extent the feeling of guilt. The hospitalization of the child leads to a family disruption, the children and the mothers due to the long periods of internment are a long time away from home. The mothers report that due to the daily monitoring of their child's hospitalization they end up leaving their professional career, giving up their dreams of career progression, often being forced to say goodbye or dismissed by the employer because of their absence. Mothers report that they find support in the family, in the parents of children with cancer, and also express the support they find in religion and faith. It was found that health professionals play a very important role for these families, especially the role of the nurse in the experiences of parents of children with cancer. It was possible through this study to verify that all respondents highly value the role of the nurse during the process of hospitalization of the child, through positive attitudes that help parents to overcome their home leave and hospitalization of the child. All mothers report that nurses felt a desire to involve them in providing care for their children.
