Abstract(s)
This research work is embedded in the curriculum of the 4th year Bachelor of Nursing at the University Fernando Pessoa - Porto and the subject is “History of Pandemics: Developments in health care and nursing” Since the dawn of humanity that natural organisms have evolved constantly, many have changed the world we live in and continue to do so. The first documented pandemic devastating was the Black Death and much of what is known about what happened in the century XIV is incorrect. The detail of the pest comes from terrified people with the devastating effects of plague although symptoms are accurate. But as the plague and how it was actually altered the course of history is still somewhat controversial. In past trips to the Discoveries microorganisms inadvertently led, unknown to the Americas, which decimated entire populations, allowing newcomers to colonize the New World without restrictions. Since ancient times microorganisms infect people around the world, eliminating part of the populations most likely at the same time that guaranteed immunity for survivors of infections. Today it continues to witness changes in our landscape. Tuberculosis and flu are attached to humanity with devastating effects since it´s, and the scourge of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) associated with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) has infected over 35 million people of whom about half have died. This epidemic has ravaged the African continent, resulting in severe economic and cultural changes, leading to untold misery, loss of family structures and an incalculable increase in the number of orphans. More recently, the first pandemic of the century, SARS (Sudden Acute Respiratory Syndrome) has led governments and international organizations raise surveillance measures to monitor such diseases. However mankind has proved that certain microorganisms can be controlled and we can even eradicate them. In this context we seek to unveil the contribution of nursing and health care developments in the prevention and control of pandemic diseases besides if you want to convey information of some of the most devastating pandemics known. In this study, we define the main objective: to study and identify the role of nurses in health care and its historical context of the diseases that had relevance to the evolution of health care today for the prevention, control and elimination of pandemics.
