Abstract(s)
This master's thesis investigates sexual offences against minors in the context of online games, focusing on parental awareness of the risks and dangers present on the internet. Sexual offences against children have intensified with the advance of new technologies, exemplified by the significant increase in this type of crime during and after the Covid-19 pandemic. Equally, online games accentuate this concern, not only because of the number of children and adolescents online on a daily basis, but also because of the advances in forms of communication. This research adopts a quantitative, cross-sectional and descriptive approach. With a sample of 200 participants, it seeks to analyze the knowledge of parents/carers (≥18 years) of children (07-17 years) about the dangers of sexual abuse in online games, using the survey method supported by the questionnaire technique, accessible online for three months. The data analysis showed that 59.5% of the participants' children play online games frequently (47.1%), using mobile phones (43.7%) and mainly in the bedroom (48.7%). In addition, 57.1% of participants claim to have good digital skills, and 68.9% are aware of security programs to monitor children's activity on the internet. 32.8% of participants report occasional concern about the dangers of online games, but only 34.5% consider interaction with strangers a crucial topic to address. However, 67.2% communicate openly with their children about the risks of the internet. Although 48.7% of respondents have never heard of online grooming, 43.7% have talked to their children about it, and 79% consider this crime very serious. Additionally, 6.7% of participants don't know how to deal with an online grooming crime. Finally, 84.9% of participants believe that educational institutions should play a more active role in raising awareness and preventing these crimes, suggesting awareness-raising actions. Open communication with children/adolescents and the prevention of this form of crime were highlighted by the participants as the most important measures.
