Abstract(s)
Entering higher education marks a change in development, occurring the transition from adolescence to adulthood and, consequently, a change at a social, psychological and physical level. This stage imposes an increased responsibility on university students, exposing them to several recurring situations of daily life and leaving them more vulnerable. These factors may trigger anxiety symptoms, which will interfere with their future daily life and personal development. Thus, the main objective of this study is to "Identify anxiety symptoms in college students". The methodology used in this study is quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional, with a non-probability convenience sample, with a sample of 156 undergraduate students studying at a private Higher Education Institution located in the north of the country. A sociodemographic and occupational questionnaire alongside the Anxiety, Depression and Stress -21 Scale was used for data collection, which was translated, adapted and validated for the Portuguese population by Pais-Ribeiro et al. (2004). After data collection, the SPSS software version 27.0 for Windows was used to perform the statistical data analysis. The results of the study revealed that most students were female, single, with an average age of 22.2 years, of Portuguese nationality, studying nursing in the 1st year of their undergraduate degree, and had not changed their place of residence at the beginning of their entry into higher education. The anxiety symptom most often reported by students was "I felt changes in my heart without doing physical exercise", in which 11.5% of this population reported that this symptom "applied to me most of the time", and the least reported by students was "I felt my mouth dry", in which 3.2% of the sample reported that this symptom "applied to me most of the time". In the subscale Anxiety with 7 items, the mean is 5.1 points, which means that these students have symptoms of "mild anxiety".
