Abstract(s)
This research aims to understand how children perceive the social support structures "Shelter Homes” and the justice system, regarding to its participation in the processes related to the situation that warranted their own institutionalization and their family’s. Thus, a qualitative study was developed, involving ten Portuguese children and teens, with ages ranging between seven and 17 years old, of both sexes, who were in the shelter for at least a month. Data collection was carried out through the interview technique, for that has been created a semi-structured script, which was previously tested with three children of different age groups. The length of the interviews was approximately twenty minutes and those were recorded and later transcribed for further analysis. All necessary authorizations (shelter, ethics committee of Universidade Fernando Pessoa) and consents (child's legal guardians) were provided for this study. The data showed that the participants have the perception that a shelter is intended to accommodate victims of domestic violence, giving their families the opportunity to start a new life project. The integration process was successful, with the participants valuing the new bonds of friendship and the work of technicians, and managing to identify positive and negative experiences. When asked about their opinion and the advice they would give to a judge about their case, most children mentioned the aggressor and the violence present in their families, saying they would ask the abuser to be removed.
