Abstract(s)
Objectives: To analyse the prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in South Africa, to assess the causes and side effects on health and economy. Methods: Literature review of recent research, consulting official data from governments, the World Health Organization, and the International Diabetes Federation. Results: There was a rapid increase in type 2 diabetes mellitus in South Africa despite undiagnosed cases. All associated health complications (cardiovascular, amputations and retinopathies, etc.) and economic costs worsened. There was an increase in mortality associated with the diagnosis of DM. Conclusions: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, its complications and associated costs have increased globally in recent decades. There is an uneven distribution of health care between continents, countries and urban and rural areas that will require an approach that favours health education and early diagnosis.
