Conhecimentos e atitudes dos estudantes sobre inteligência artificial em medicina dentária: estudo observacional transversal

dc.description.abstractA Inteligência Artificial (IA) tem vindo a afirmar-se como uma ferramenta cada vez mais relevante na prática clínica e no ensino da Medicina Dentária, com impacto crescente na forma como os cuidados de saúde oral são planeados, organizados e prestados. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar os conhecimentos, perceções e atitudes dos estudantes do 4.º e 5.º ano do Mestrado Integrado em Medicina Dentária da Faculdade de Ciências da Saúde da Universidade Fernando Pessoa relativamente à aplicação da IA em contexto clínico. Para tal, foi desenvolvido um estudo observacional, transversal e quantitativo, com recurso a um questionário anónimo e autoadministrado, aplicado online, e respondido por uma amostra de 120 estudantes. Os resultados demonstraram que o nível de conhecimento geral sobre IA encontra-se predominantemente nos níveis básico e moderado, com uma tendência de progressão positiva ao longo do percurso académico. Foram, contudo, identificadas lacunas significativas ao nível do conhecimento sobre ferramentas específicas de IA e sobre os enquadramentos éticos e jurídicos associados à sua utilização clínica. A maioria dos estudantes reconheceu vantagens concretas da IA, nomeadamente ao nível da precisão diagnóstica, da eficiência operatória e da redução do tempo de tratamento, embora tenha igualmente referido preocupações relevantes relacionadas com a complexidade tecnológica, a proteção de dados e a eventual perda do controlo clínico humano. Os dados indicaram ainda uma predisposição positiva para integrar a IA na prática clínica futura, bem como uma valorização crescente da IA como apoio no início da carreira profissional. A maioria defendeu claramente a necessidade urgente de reforçar a formação académica nesta área, com ênfase em conteúdos técnicos, éticos e práticos. Estes resultados sustentam a pertinência de incluir, de forma estruturada, a IA nos planos curriculares dos cursos de Medicina Dentária, promovendo uma integração crítica, responsável e eficaz destas tecnologias no futuro da profissão.por
dc.description.abstractArtificial Intelligence (AI) has been asserting itself as an increasingly relevant tool in clinical practice and in the teaching of Dentistry, with a growing impact on the way oral health care is planned, organized and delivered. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge, perceptions and attitudes of students in the 4th and 5th year of the Integrated Master's Degree in Dental Medicine at the Faculty of Health Sciences of the Fernando Pessoa University regarding the application of AI in a clinical context. To this end, an observational, cross-sectional and quantitative study was developed, using an anonymous and self-administered questionnaire, applied online, and answered by a sample of 120 students. The results showed that the level of general knowledge about AI is predominantly at the basic and moderate levels, with a trend of positive progression throughout the academic path. However, significant gaps were identified in terms of knowledge about specific AI tools and about the ethical and legal frameworks associated with their clinical use. Most students recognized concrete advantages of AI, namely in terms of diagnostic accuracy, operative efficiency and reduction of treatment time, although they also mentioned relevant concerns related to technological complexity, data protection and the possible loss of human clinical control. The data also indicated a positive predisposition to integrate AI into future clinical practice, as well as a growing appreciation of AI as an early career support. The majority clearly defended the urgent need to strengthen academic training in this area, with an emphasis on technical, ethical and practical content. These results support the relevance of including, in a structured way, Artificial Intelligence in the curricular plans of Dental Medicine courses, promoting a critical, responsible and effective integration of these technologies in the future of the profession.eng
