Abstract(s)
A infecção pelo Vírus do Papiloma Humano (VPH) é reconhecida mundialmente como causa significativa de mortalidade e morbilidade. Ambos os géneros são afectados e estima-se que pessoas sexualmente activas estejam em contacto com ele, pelo menos, uma vez na vida. Embora haja muitos estudos relacionados com o género feminino, no que concerne ao género masculino são escassos.
Este estudo é do tipo descritivo simples, de carácter quantitativo, tem como principais objectivos, identificar conhecimentos e comportamentos/hábitos relativamente à infecção pelo VPH de jovens que frequentavam a praia Internacional de Matosinhos, no período de 25 a 29 de Agosto de 2010. A colheita de dados foi efectuada através do preenchimento de um questionário, utilizando a amostragem não probabilística acidental por conveniência, sendo a amostra constituída por trinta raparigas e trinta rapazes, com idades compreendidas entre os 19 e 25 anos.
Nesta amostra pode-se concluir que a maioria (40%) tem maus conhecimentos sobre a infecção pelo VPH e são maioritariamente as raparigas (40%) que respondem saber o que é este vírus comparativamente com os 25% dos rapazes.
No que diz respeito aos conhecimentos sobre o VPH, estes jovens são mais esclarecidos quanto: ao género afectado pelo VPH, ao modo de transmissão homem – mulher e vice-versa, ao tempo que a infecção leva a manifestar-se e à utilização do preservativo como forma de prevenir a infecção.
No que concerne aos comportamentos/hábitos da amostra, destacam-se como atitudes de risco no género masculino: o início precoce da actividade sexual; a multiplicidade de parceiros sexuais; fumar mais que 10 cigarros por dia e a não adesão à consulta de vigilância do Planeamento Familiar. No género feminino destacam-se a não utilização de preservativo e o uso da pílula por períodos de tempo prolongados.
Assim, uma vez que este vírus é facilmente transmissível e, por vezes, totalmente silencioso, o enfermeiro tem aqui um papel fulcral investindo na educação para a saúde e sensibilizando para os exames de rastreio e vacinação e contribuindo ainda para futuras investigações.
The infection by human papiloma virus is recognized worldwide as a significant cause of mortality and morbidity. Both sexes are affected and it is estimated that sexually active people are in contact with it at least once in a life time. In spite of the existence of many studies related to the female gender, in relation to the male gender are very few.
We conducted a simple descriptive study, quantitative character, has as main objectives identifying knowledge and behaviours/habits relative to HPV infection of young people that frequented the Internacional’s beach of Matosinhos between 25th and 29th of August of 2010. Data collection was performed by completing a questionnaire, using non-probability sampling accidental for convenience, the sample consisted of thirty girls and thirty boys, aged between 19 and 25 years old.
In this sample we can conclude that most (40%) have poor knowledge about HPV infection and are mostly girls (40%) that know what this virus is compared with boys (25%).
With regard to knowledge about HPV, these young people are more informed about: gender affected by HPV, the transmission mode male – female and vice versa, the time that infection takes to manifest and the use of condom as a way to prevent infection.
Regarding the behaviours/habits of the sample, stand out as risk attitudes in male gender: early initiation of sexual activity, multiple sexual partners, and non-adherence to surveillance appointment of Family Planning. In female gender stands out, no use of condom and use of pill for extended periods of time.
Therefore, since this virus is easily transmissible and sometimes completely silent, the nurse has a crucial role by investing in health education and awareness about screening and vaccination and further contributing to future investigations.
