Abstract(s)
The elderly population growth is virtually a worldwide phenomenon with numerous repercussions at various levels and from which result different problems, being the violence against the elderly one of the most worrying. (Carvalho, 2012) The assignment pretends to access the importance of Polícia Municipal on improving the citizen’s safety, benchmarking this reality through contributions of the elderly populations from the municipality of Matosinhos. According to the Portuguese Association of Victim’s Support (Associação Portuguesa de Apoio à Vítima - APAV, 2015), for every thousand Portuguese citizens over 60 years old, 123 may be target of some kind of violence from family, friends, neighbours or remunerated staff, when the European Union average is about 21 to 22 for each thousand persons. The presence and the dialogue of the police officers among elderly and isolated/confined communities is noticeable, dismissing partly its reactive models and opening up and strengthening a path of trust and a closer relationship between the population and the police, establishing a kind of community bond. To meet this goals, a study was conducted by the investigator of this project, using one semi-structured interview, designed for this purpose, as an information collection instrument. The semi-structured interview was performed to the elderly of Matosinhos county and has contributed to the foundation and development of the empirical and methodological part of this graduation project. We have employed a semi-structured interview in order to analyse the preventive role of Polícia Municipal in relation to crimes of violence against elderly people and community receptivity, analysing security perceptions with the presence of these agents oriented for a more regular and close contact with the population. The search for conditions that provide increased quality of life for people, has led to the identification of situations where the elderly have their rights violated (Dias, 2004).
