Abstract(s)
According to the United Nations (UN), in article 23 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the human right to work is a fundamental principle recognized in any part of the world. In addition, Article 59 of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic also guarantees the rights of workers "without distinction of age, sex, race, citizenship, territory of origin, religion, political or ideological beliefs". It so happens that if, for every citizen, employment is a vital factor of survival, for the immigrant it also presupposes the rescue of their dignity, self-esteem and autonomy, in addition to the basic needs of sustenance and social and economic growth. In theory, the integration and support services ensure that this work of integration into the new culture is being done. The objective of this research work is, through a case study, to investigate whether the public policies to encourage employment existing in Portugal are being conducted to guarantee protection of their rights and equal work opportunities to immigrants, notably those who live in the Municipality of Porto.
