Abstract(s)
Objective: The purpose of this study was to observe the physiological changes that the concentric and eccentric training provoke in the musculoskeletal system of the quadriceps muscle group. Methods: To perform this review, a search was made in the PubMed database with the words "quadriceps", "concentric contraction", "eccentric contraction", "muscle strength" and "muscle volume", using the "AND" and "OR" logic operators. In addition, other relevant articles were selected through references from other sources. Results: Eccentric training provokes a greater stimulus in the muscle, resulting in increased strength related to increases in the transverse area of the muscle and neuromuscular adaptations. The training demonstrated that high velocities cause greater muscle stimuli than low velocities, although velocity is not a specific training factor, and the type of contraction is a major factor for different physiological changes in the muscle. Conclusion: Eccentric training plays an important role in muscle, proving to be important in rehabilitation and injury prevention in athletes and non-athletes.
