Abstract(s)
Dentistry has undergone a series of changes throughout its history. It has evolved from a "traditional" concept, based on functionality and biology, to a modern evolution, now more centred on the patient and, in particular, their aesthetic concerns. Today, dental aesthetics is a science that values beauty in nature, significantly influencing an individual's first impression. The front teeth play an essential role in contemporary dental aesthetics, influenced by factors such as contour, symmetry, alignment and shape, and their darkening can have a significant psychosocial impact on the patient, affecting self-esteem, quality of life and social relationships. The options can be broadly categorized into non-invasive or minimally invasive treatments, such as tooth whitening, and more invasive approaches, including direct and indirect restorations, such as veneers and crowns, in composite resin or ceramic. Each method has specific advantages and disadvantages, requiring careful selection based on a comprehensive assessment of each clinical case, including etiological factors, clinical conditions, the dentist's experience and the patient's expectations. All of these treatment options make it possible to respond to the patient's aesthetic requirements in order to improve their smile. The aim of this narrative review will be to analyze the restorative methods available for the successful treatment of darkened anterior teeth. The advantages and disadvantages will be presented, as well as the possible complications of the various treatments. The clinical protocols of the different approaches to treating darkened anterior teeth will also be described.
