Literacia em saúde oral: estudo comparativo entre estudantes do 4º ano da ESS-FP e de medicina dentária da UFP utilizando a escala REALD-29 PT

dc.description.abstractObjetivo: Avaliar e comparar a literacia em saúde oral de estudantes do 4.º ano do Mestrado Integrado em Medicina Dentária da UFP e das licenciaturas em saúde da ESSFP, através da aplicação da escala REALD-29 PT. Material e Métodos: Estudo quantitativo, observacional e transversal, realizado entre abril e maio de 2025. Participaram 74 estudantes do 4.º ano: 37 do Mestrado Integrado em Medicina Dentária da UFP e 37 das licenciaturas em saúde da ESS-FP (Ciências Biomédicas Laboratoriais, Enfermagem, Fisioterapia e Terapia da Fala). Foram aplicados presencialmente a escala REALD-29 PT e um questionário sociodemográfico. Avaliaram-se o número de acertos, o tempo médio de resposta por palavra e a percentagem de acertos em vocabulário técnico. A análise estatística incluiu medidas descritivas e testes de comparação entre grupos, com nível de significância de p < 0,05. Resultados: Os estudantes do Mestrado Integrado em Medicina Dentária da UFP obtiveram melhores resultados na escala REALD-29 PT, com uma média de acertos superior, menor variabilidade nas respostas e um tempo médio de leitura por palavra mais reduzido. A sua performance foi também mais homogénea em comparação com os estudantes das licenciaturas em saúde da ESSFP. Neste segundo grupo, observaram-se bons níveis de literacia funcional em saúde oral, mas com maior dispersão dos resultados entre os diferentes cursos. A percentagem de acertos em vocabulário técnico foi significativamente superior no grupo da UFP. Conclusão: Os estudantes do Mestrado Integrado em Medicina Dentária da UFP demonstraram níveis mais elevados de literacia funcional em saúde oral do que os estudantes das licenciaturas em saúde da ESS-FP, o que reforça o impacto de uma formação mais especializada nesta área. Estes resultados sublinham a importância de integrar conteúdos de saúde oral de forma mais abrangente na formação dos futuros profissionais de saúde. A aplicação de instrumentos como o REALD-29 PT poderá contribuir para identificar lacunas formativas e orientar estratégias educativas mais eficazes em saúde oral.por
dc.description.abstractObjective: To assess and compare the oral health literacy of 4th-year students enrolled in the Integrated Master’s Degree in Dental Medicine at UFP and in health-related undergraduate programs at ESS-FP, using the REALD-29 PT scale. Material and Methods: A quantitative, observational, and cross-sectional study was conducted between April and May 2025. The sample included 74 fourth-year students: 37 from the Integrated Master’s in Dental Medicine at UFP and 37 from the health-related undergraduate programs at ESS-FP (Biomedical Laboratory Sciences, Nursing, Physiotherapy and Speech Therapy). The REALD-29 PT scale and a sociodemographic questionnaire were administered in person. The number of correct answers, the average response time per word, and the percentage of correct answers for technical vocabulary were evaluated. Statistical analysis included descriptive measures and group comparison tests, with a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: Students from the Integrated Master’s in Dental Medicine at UFP achieved higher scores on the REALD-29 PT scale, with a higher average number of correct answers, lower response variability, and a shorter average reading time per word. Their performance was also more homogeneous compared to students from the ESS-FP undergraduate programs. In the latter group, functional oral health literacy levels were generally good but showed greater variation across different courses. The percentage of correct answers for technical terms was significantly higher in the UFP group. Conclusion: Students in the Integrated Master’s in Dental Medicine at UFP demonstrated higher levels of functional oral health literacy compared to students in the health-related undergraduate programs at ESS-FP, highlighting the impact of more specialized training in this area. These findings underline the importance of integrating oral health content more broadly into the education of future health professionals. The use of tools such as the REALD-29 PT can help identify educational gaps and guide more effective teaching strategies in oral health.eng
