Abstract(s)
This undergraduate project aims to analyze the recurring impacts of the depreciation of the Brazilian currency, the Real, on the national economy and the ways it increases the vulnerability of the population in facing poverty and social inequality in Brazil. Grounded in investigations concerning the influence of exchange rate devaluation on the country's economic context, this study seeks to answer the following main question: What are the specific effects of the Realās depreciation on poverty and social inequality in Brazil, and how do these impacts affect the lives of Brazilian citizens? The research explores how currency depreciation intensifies the cost of living and reshapes the countryās macroeconomic landscape by increasing inflation and the prices of essential consumer goods, thereby raising poverty levels. It also examines how devaluation contributes to worsening income distribution and the unequal access to employment opportunities. Furthermore, the absence of effective public policies to mitigate these effects is identified as a key factor that exacerbates the cycle of economic and social inequality already present in the country. The analysis is supported by recent economic data and literature reviews discussing economic fluctuations and their social consequences, emphasizing the urgent need for responsive political alternatives. A deeper understanding of the mechanisms through which currency depreciation disproportionately affects the most vulnerable sectors of the population is essential to formulating such responses.
