Oral health is increasingly recognized as an important factor in general health, particularly in relation to cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. This systematic review aims to explore the relationship between chronic periodontitis, Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection and the risk of developing cognitive impairment in people aged 65 and over. To this end, eight clinical studies were selected from the PubMed and ScienceDirect databases, meeting inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results reported in these studies suggest that chronic inflammation linked to oral health, as well as persistent viral infections, can contribute to cognitive deterioration. On the other hand, certain interventions, such as the treatment of periodontitis or the use of antiviral drugs, may have a protective effect against the progression of these pathologies. These observations pave the way for further research and highlight the importance of comprehensive treatment combining oral health and neurology.
