Abstract(s)
School Absenteeism is a problem that has been occurring frequently, based on the records of the processes of the Commissions for the Protection of Children and Young People (CPCJ), thus affecting the younger population, namely from the beginning of adolescence, families, schools, and the country. It has been progressively increasing not only in Portugal, but also worldwide. Being such a complex subject, the study of this theme allowed me to conclude, based on all the research and literature available, that school absenteeism consists of the lack of attendance to classes, tests, and other academic activities, is just the tip of the iceberg that affects young people and/or children, schools, and the country. This problem, therefore, can be linked to several aspects and have several causes, such as physical and mental health problems of young people or families, family, and financial problems, as well as lack of motivation, which will be addressed throughout this work. To combat this problem, school absenteeism should be identified early and intercepted by professionals working directly in the field. This study is based on an investigation through qualitative methodologies, which will be developed with students aged between 14 and 16 years old, enrolled in the António Sérgio Secondary School, in Vila Nova de Gaia. This study will be developed using interviews with the students as an instrument that will allow us to analyze this phenomenon and understand in what way I can understand it.
