Abstract(s)
The field of architecture is becoming increasingly concerned with environmental issues. In this sense, some ecological features can be found in shipping containers. The proposal for modular, sustainable housing using prefabricated shipping containers, defender the effective use of resources by recycling and re–using materials, while decreasing our ecological footprint. The proposal focuses on the use of prefabricated shipping containers that act not only as structural elements, but also as space-generating objects which create the final design for a single family dwelling. The aim is to analyse the benefits and handicaps of building with shipping containers, how to make them habitable and to perceive which materials and constructive solutions best assimilate this new emerging architecture. Using shipping containers as basic elements for home planning allows to achieve an innovative design which merges functional spaces along with sustainable, bioclimatic architecture. The project’s main objective is to create a single family dwelling, allowing for an eco-friendly, comfortable living space which fulfils all family needs while relating coherently to it’s surroundings.
