O Selénio é um elemento essencial de vários componentes das vias metabólicas, incluindo o metabolismo das hormonas, sistemas de defesa e funções imunológicas. Existe assim, uma forte necessidade de técnicas analíticas para efetuar e interpretar as funções e papéis do selénio nas diferentes partes do organismo.
O crescente conhecimento sobre a importância do Selénio para a saúde humana também levou a uma variedade de dietas contendo este composto. O Selénio é integrado nas proteínas através de um mecanismo de co-tradução como o 21º aminoácido selenocisteína (SEG).
O objetivo do presente trabalho é a análise do Selénio e a importância para o organismo humano, tendo em destaque os benefícios e as controvérsias.
No sentido de o concretizar, traçaram-se os seguintes objetivos específicos: identificar os principais benefícios do selénio para o organismo humano, determinar a sua função no organismo humano; identificar os diversos estudos existentes sobre os seus benefícios e controvérsias para o organismo humano.
Após a realização deste estudo pretende-se alcançar os seguintes resultados: obter conhecimento acerca das caraterísticas do selénio no organismo humano; aumentar os conhecimentos sobre os benefícios e fatores prejudiciais do selénio; identificar as variáveis que influenciam o risco de altos níveis de selénio no organismo humano.

There is thus a strong need for analytical techniques to effect and interpret the roles and roles of selenium in different parts of the body. Growing knowledge about the importance of selenium to human health has also led to a variety of diets containing this compound. Selenium is integrated into proteins through a co-translation mechanism as the 21st amino acid selenocysteine (SEG). The objective of the present work is the analysis of Selenium and the importance for the human organism, highlighting the benefits and the controversies. In order to achieve this, the following specific objectives were drawn: to identify the main benefits of selenium for the human organism, to determine its function in the human organism; identify the various existing studies on its benefits and controversies for the human organism. After the accomplishment of this study we intend to obtain the following results: To obtain knowledge about the characteristics of selenium in the human organism; Increase knowledge about the benefits and harmful factors in selenium; Identify the variables that influence the risk of high levels of selenium in the human body.
