Abstract(s)
Background: virtual reality therapy for exposure is a new type of therapeutic approach used in pelvic floor dysfunction rehabilitation programs, supervised by the physical therapist. Objectives: to verify the influence of virtual reality as an adjunct to pelvic floor muscle training in the treatment of pelvic floor dysfunction in postmenopausal women. Methodology: the survey was conducted in Scielo, PubMed and Google Scholar databases, based on articles dated between 2014 and 2016, evaluated according to the Critical Appraisal Skills Program (CASP) scale. Results: this review included 5 studies, with a total of 200 female participants, with 168 postmenopausal women. There was an improvement in several parameters associated with pelvic floor dysfunctions, namely in the force of contraction of the pelvic floor muscles, in urinary symptoms, in the quality of life of patients. Conclusion: the pelvic floor muscles training combined with virtual reality reveals positive benefits especially in the function of the pelvic floor muscles, in the reduction of urinary symptoms and in the adhesion of patients with pelvic floor dysfunctions. However, further studies are suggested to determine the effectiveness of pelvic floor muscle training combined with virtual reality in other pelvic floor disorders.
