Clásicos y románticos: ensayistas literarios venezolanos del siglo XIX

| dc.description.abstract | Se realiza un recorrido por los principales ensayos venezolanos del siglo XIX partiendo del periodo colonial para contextualizar los primeros poemas de Andrés Bello y las cartas de Simón Bolívar a Olmedo, que pueden considerarse el comienzo del ensayo literario en Venezuela. Desde ese punto de partida puede comprenderse la polémica entre clásicos y románticos que permite acercarse a los ensayos de Fermín Toro y Cecilio Acosta, así como detenerse en los de Rafael María Baralt y Juan Vicente González. El repaso concluye con las tendencias dominantes en las últimas décadas del siglo XIX, con especial atención a Felipe Larrazábal, Amenodoro Urdaneta, Marco Antonio Saluzzo o Manuel Fombona Palacio y con las tendencias positivistas, particularmente en Gil Fortoul, Luis López Méndez y César Zumeta, así como la entrada al siglo XX. El recorrido propuesto permite advertir que el ensayo en todas sus vertientes (literaria, histórica o política) fue, en el siglo XIX, la forma más lograda para expresar las preocupaciones sociales e intelectuales de Venezuela en un momento de gran dificultad para su definición nacional. An overview is made of the main Venezuelan essays of the 19th century starting from the colonial period in order to contextualize the first poems of Andrés Bello and the letters Simón Bolívar wrote to Olmedo, which can be considered the beginning of the literary essay in this country. From this approach we can understand the polemics between Classicists and Romantics, which helps us to understand the essays of Fermín Toro and Cecilio Acosta, as well as those of Rafael María Baralt and Juan Vicente González. The review concludes with the dominant trends of the last decades of the 19th century, with special attention to Felipe Larrazábal, Amenodoro Urdaneta, Marco Antonio Saluzzo and Manuel Fombona Palacio and with the positivist trends, particularly in Gil Fortoul, Luis López Méndez and César Zumeta, as well as with the entry into the 20th century. The overview proposed allows us to see that the essay in all its forms (literary, historical and political) was, in the19th century, the most successful form for expressing the social and intellectual concerns of Venezuela at a time of great difficulty in its definition as a nation. | por |
