Abstract(s)
Although animal-assisted interventions have proven very effectiveness in improving the quality of life of the general population and increased scientific interest in the implementation of such interventions in various contexts, few studies investigated their benefits in relation to the justice system, especially in Portugal. The present study, entitled 'Benefits of an Animal-Assisted Intervention in Supporting Children Victims of Domestic Violence,' aims to investigate the benefits of implementing an animal-assisted intervention program in a social institution, to understand how such an intervention could contribute to improving the well-being of children who are victims of domestic violence and are housed in a Shelter. The relevance of this issue justifies the present research, which adopted a quantitative and qualitative methodology through the execution of two studies. In the first study, 7 children/teenagers of both gender, aged between 8 and 18 years, and 5 mothers, aged between 18 and 50 years, who were sheltered in a Shelter participated. To evaluate the well-being indices of children exposed to domestic violence housed in the Shelter before and after the animal-assisted intervention, the Kidscreen-52 (parent version) and Kidscreen-10 (child/teenager version) instruments were used, administered after informed consent. The results of the research didnt allow for a differential analysis between the pre- and post-test due to the sample mortality; however, they showed a high score regarding the perception of Quality of Life related to the health of the children/teenagers in both phases. In the qualitative study, 6 mothers, aged between 24 and 48 years, housed in the Shelter, participated and were subjected to a semi-structured interview aimed at understanding how the animal-assisted intervention contributed to the well-being of children who were victims of domestic violence housed in the Shelter, accessing the perceptions and perspectives of the mothers. The results demonstrated that the mothers reported improvements in their children's behavior and satisfaction with their participation in the animal-assisted intervention program. It is concluded, both from the empirical study and the literature review, that animal-assisted intervention can and should be implemented in several social responses, as it promotes benefits of well-being.
