Abstract(s)
Infections associated to health care is a growing problem in institutions which provide health care. Not all infections associated to health care are avoidable, however, a significant proportion can be prevented if we sharpen the awareness of health professionals to the adoption of good practice in the context of the prevention and control of infection, namely in the adhesion to the measures of intervention in the prevention of infection in the surgical site. Nonetheless, the identification of the mechanisms which promote the adhesion of health professionals to recommended practice continues to be a challenge. The aim of this study is: To examine the adhesion of health professionals to “Measures of Intervention” in the Prevention of Infection in the Surgical Site. This study has the general aim of evaluating observance of the practices of prevention and control of infection by the implementation of measures of intervention. Furthermore, as specific objectives, we aim to identify the efficacy of the observance of the practices of prevention and control of infection by the implementation of the measures of intervention of the ILC, identify situations of non-observance of the practices of the prevention and control of infection related to the measures of intervention of the ILC, identify the causes of non-observance of the practices of prevention and control of infection related to the measures of implementation of the ILC, calculate the rate of adhesion to/observance of the practices of prevention and control of infection related to the measures of intervention of the ILC. The present scientific investigation follows the steps of a quantative study of a descriptive cross-sectional type. To gather the data a questionnaire was used, the target group for the study being the nurses from the Central Operating Theatres of the Centro Hospitalar of Vila Nova de Gaia. The data was then subjected to statistical analysis. The results obtained demonstrate a variation according to the age of the sample group, this being between 25 and 54 years of age, the average being 41.9. The sample group is made up mainly of those of the female sex, this corresponding to 66.7%. Most of the participants are married, corresponding to 66.7%. The average in terms of number of years of professional experience is 18.4 years, the average of number of years working in the present place of work being 12.7% years. 25 of the health professionals are nurses with Degree in Nursing being their qualification (92.6%), the majority attended specific training on the control of infection. 19 nurses (70.45). However, 8 professionals (29.6%) had not undertaken specific training in the control of infection (29.6%). The adhesion of the nurses to good practice was 50% and that of non-adherence, 40%. It was concluded that training and professional experience have an overriding relationship to the control and prevention of infection in the surgical site. Based on this, there emerges the need to raise the awareness of hospital managers, and nurses in particular, to continue to train health professionals with the aim of improving the care given and the safety of the patient.
