Abstract(s)
Within the scope of the curricular unit Graduation Project for Fernando Pessoa University’s Nursing Degree, it was proposed to carry out a research related to a topic of interest chosen by the students. The chosen theme was: “Feeding during the first year of life – What parents know”. Scientific evidence has proven that there are health benefits from exclusive breastfeeding during the first 6 months of life. After this age the volume of ingested milk is insufficient and it is not possible to adequately supply the energy-protein and nutrient of infants needs. The food diversification consists on the transition from an exclusively milk based alimentation, to a semi-solid one and, later, a solid one. There are no specific norms to determine in which order the food should be introduced in food diversification, this decision depends on the parents and the health care provider who accompanies the baby. In order to carry out this research, we will use a quantitative study together with the parents of children up to 1 year attending three kindergardens in the council of Castelo de Paiva. This research aims to verify the respondents parents’ have knowledge in what concerns the baby’s feeding, as well as identify any difficulties and doubts the parents have. The data collection instrument used was a questionnaire, delivered to a sample of 85 parents with children aged from 0 months to 12 months. The results show that most parents have knowledge about how to feed their children during their first year of life. The strategy used for the preparation of the present study was a bibliographical review. The research was carried out using books, magazine articles and theses.
