Introdução: A dor orofacial, tendo muitas vezes origem somática, constitui um aspecto importante no tratamento dentário, bucal e facial, podendo manifestar-se com dores superficiais ou profundas. As disfunções temporomandibulares (DTM), podem ser divididas em disfunções musculoesqueléticas e articulares, sendo que ambas podem ser consideradas manifestações de dor orofacial profunda. A sua etiologia é controversa e o seu tratamento é consequentemente complexo e multifatorial.
Objetivo: Com este estudo pretende verificar-se a vantagem da utilização da terapia a laser no tratamento de disfunção temporomandibular e dor orofacial.
Métodos: Trata-se de uma revisão narrativa da literatura com base em artigos publicados no período entre 2002 e 2022.
Conclusões: A laserterapia mostra-se como um tratamento benéfico para DTM. No entanto, estudos futuros devem considerar uma análise comparativa entre o laser de baixa intensidade e outras modalidades terapêuticas, com vista a demonstrar a sua utilidade para o tratamento da dor em longo prazo.

Among these are temporomandibular disorders (TMD), which can be divided into muscle and joint disorders, both of which can be considered manifestations of deep orofacial pain. Its etiology is controversial and its treatment is consequently complex and multifactorial. Objective: To verify the advantage of using laser therapy in the treatment of temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain. Future studies should consider a comparative analysis between low-intensity laser and other therapeutic modalities for long-term pain treatment.
