Abstract(s)
This exploratory study aims to understand the impact that the perception of life and death have on the daily life and motivation to live of older people and also understand how these perceptions are developed. Therefore, we interviewed 5 senescent patients admitted to a geriatric hospital in Porto using an interview script developed for this purpose. This sample is composed of 3 elderly men and 2 elderly women, with ages ranging from 67 to 84 years old. These interviews allowed us to collect enough data to answer the objectives initially raised. The main results obtained showed that there is a real impact on the way older people live their lives, caused by their perceptions about what life is for them and about their death. We also found that perceptions about these concepts are developed throughout life and are affected by several dimensions such as learning and acquiring knowledge about death, loneliness and abandonment, institutionalization, psychological distress, religious, supernatural or transcendence beliefs, and stressful or traumatic experiences throughout life. However, due to the small sample size we were not able to verify with certainty the influence of certain dimensions, such as aging and the death of loved ones. Thus, we suggest that future studies should use a larger sample size in order to be more representative.
