dc.description.abstractObjetivo: Atualizar e sumariar a evidência científica encontrada na literatura que investigasse a efetividade da terapia manual na redução da dor em pacientes com disfunção temporomandibular (DTM). Metodologia: Revisão sistemática nas bases de dados Pubmed/Medline, SPORTDiscus, CINAHL, ScienceDirect e PEDro para identificar estudos de coorte prospetivos que avaliassem a eficácia da terapia manual na dor em indivíduos com DTM, publicados entre 2004 e 2014. A qualidade metodológica foi avaliada pela escala Newcastle-Ottawa e o nível de evidência pela escala Oxford Center for Evidence-Based Medicine. Resultados: Foram incluídos 6 estudos, envolvendo 185 participantes (35.1 anos), com uma média de 3.8 na escala de Newcastle-Ottawa e os níveis de evidência foram 1b e 2c. Conclusão: A evidência encontrada nesta revisão sugere que a terapia manual parece ser eficaz na redução de dor em indivíduos com DTM, no entanto, salienta-se a necessidade de mais estudos.pt_PT
dc.description.abstractObjective: Update and summarize the scientific evidence found in the literature that investigate the efficacy of manual therapy in the pain reduction of patients with temporomandibular disorder (TMD). Methods: Systematic review in the databases Pubmed/Medline, SPORTDiscus, CINAHL, ScienceDirect and PEDro to identify prospective coorte studies that assessed the efficacy of manual therapy on pain in individuals with TMD, published between 2004 and 2014. The methodological quality was assessed by Newcastle-Ottawa scale and the level of evidence by Oxford Center for Evidence Based Medicine. Results: Six studies were included, involving 185 patients (35.19 years), with a mean score of 6.7 on the Newcastle-Ottawa scale and level of evidence was 1b and 2c. Conclusion: The evidence found in this review suggests that the manual therapy seems to be effective in reducing pain in individuals with TMD, however, it is highlighted the need for further investigation.pt_PT
