Abstract(s)
The phenomenon of aging is a common process to all people, which needs more and better research, to deconstruct the ideas of its renunciation, through the promotion of learning, self-knowledge and acceptance of diversity and difference. The recognition of these differences, including iniquity and injustice, should guide the creation of accessible opportunities for all, in the context of active and healthy ageing. The general objective is to explore the perception of a group of elderly people supported by the Project Terceira (C)Idade, from the NGO Doctors of the World, about power and usefulness, aiming to identify ways of exercising autonomy, citizenship and social participation. It was also intended to identify which barriers were perceived by the group as well as their opinion on the influence of the social project, in which everyone is inserted. For this exploratory and descriptive case study, a qualitative methodology was adopted. The data collection technique selected, was the semi-structured interview, applied to a sample of beneficiaries of the TCI project, that met the inclusion criteria and who showed willingness and interest in participating. For this exploratory and descriptive case study, following a qualitative methodology. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed in their content, with the elaboration of tables for a better understanding and interpretation of the results obtained. Finally, the results reveal the group's opinions and respond to the objectives set. Overall, everyone would like more opportunities to be heard and to be involved in the community, playing socially useful roles. The desire to maintain their autonomy preserved is notorious, however, they recognize the need for more support and monitoring at the social and health level, suggesting that it is also public policies that sustain inequality and social exclusion, of the most vulnerable groups, in access to resources. In addition, a deep connection of the participants to the TCI project was identified, which they recognized with an essential role in promoting autonomy, citizenship and participation, reducing the barriers (identified by them) and supporting for an ‘Aging in Place’, in harmony with the concepts advocated by the current paradigm.
