Neste trabalho procura resgatar-se a obra de José Júlio Gonçalves, um dos pioneiros da sociologia da informação e da comunicação em Portugal. Recorreu-se à pesquisa bibliográfica e à revisão de literatura. Conclui-se que o autor se preocupou em diagnosticar o estado do jornalismo no mundo português, incluindo as então colónias africanas e asiáticas, recuperando factos olvidados pela história, nomeadamente a intervenção portuguesa na expansão da imprensa e da tipografia. Também faz um diagnóstico jurídico-sociológico à situação do jornalismo português de então, insinuando, sem emitir juízos de valor, que a censura era um instrumento de propaganda do Governo, que, como todos os governos, zelava pelos seus interesses através da política de informação adoptada.
This paper seeks to redeem the work of José Júlio Gonçalves, one of the pioneers of the sociological study of information and communication in Portugal. The research is based in literature review. We concluded that the author tried to made a diagnosis of the state of journalism in the Portuguese world, including the African and Asian colonies, retrieving facts hided by history, like the Portuguese intervention in the expansion of the press and printing in the world. He also made a diagnosis of the legal and sociological situation of journalism in Portuguese explaining that censorship was a propaganda tool of the government, which, like all governments, watched over their interests through the adopted information policy.
