Abstract(s)
Air quality is an essential factor for quality of life and human health. In contemporary society, there is a worldwide concern about atmospheric, chemical and biological pollutants. The indoor air is mostly from the outside, and in some places like microbiology class laboratories, the indoor air is contaminated with bioaerosols. Essential oils, which are natural extracts of aromatic plants, have been used in folk medicine for centuries, and for some decades they have increasingly aroused the interest of researchers because they are composed of compounds with different purposes such as antimicrobial. The objective of the work was to evaluate the efficacy of essential oils in the elimination of bacteria present in the air in the laboratories of Universidade Fernando Pessoa, used in microbiology classes. It is intended to contribute to an improvement in the microbiological quality of indoor air in laboratories. Initially a characterization of the laboratories was carried out, regarding the type of bioaerosols present in the air. Subsequently, air samples were collected before applying the mixture of essential oils. After counting the Colony Forming Units formed after incubation of the culture media, each colony morphotype was spiked in a chromogenic medium and characterized in relation to Gram .. The results only demonstrated the effectiveness of the spray of essential oils, and in some samples there was a decrease of more than 40% in the number of UFC. With that, we conclude that the mixture of essential oils used had a good efficiency and contributes to the improvement of indoor air quality.
