Abstract(s)
Portuguese research in same-sex intimate partner violence (SSIPV) has been focused in the study of prevalence and characterization of violence. The purpose of both studies presented on this paper is to examine SSIPV with a specific focus on the effects of gender and gender-role expectations. In the first article, through a systematic literature review, from a total of 418 articles found on four electronic databases (B-on; PubMed; Sage, and PsycInfo), seven were selected for analysis. Four major domains in which gender and gender-role expectations affect SSIPV were found: normalizing violence; recognizing violence; help-seeking and social isolation. In the second article are presented the results of a qualitative study in which five participants (four female and one male) self-identified as victims were interviewed. From the content analysis of the data resulted four major categories in which gender and gender-role expectations affect SSIPV: gender-roles performed by each element of the couple; decision to leave the abusive relationship; help-seeking and in the vocabulary used by participants. From the results of both studies it was possible to conclude that more than affecting the dynamic of violence, gender and gender-role expectations affect the way victims understand their experiences of SSIPV and the perceptions of others (e.g. family members, friends, social practitioners, law enforcement agents, etc.).
