Abstract(s)
The decision-making process is guided by a reflexive and rational path, where individuals weigh up the costs/benefits (Becker, 1968; Cornish & Clarke, 1987). In turn, low self-control contributes to a greater likelihood of involvement in delinquent behaviour (Pratt & Cullen, 2000). The present investigation aimed to apply the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB; Ajzen, 1991) to the study of the criminal intention relating to the crime of drug trafficking Another of the intentions was to relate this intention to the Low Self-Control Scale (Grasmick et al., 1993). In order to achieve these objectives, two scales were applied: one of them built specifically within the scope of this investigation to measure the variables inherent to TCP and another to operationalize the components of the low self-control scale to a final sample of 251 participants. The results revealed statistically significant correlations and regressions between the variables of the Theory of Planned Behaviour, self-control, self-reported delinquency and the intention to traffic drugs. The results reinforce the importance of considering individual and social factors when analysing the decision-making process, especially in the context of drug trafficking. The contributions of this research to Criminology and proposals for future lines of research are also presented.
