Abstract(s)
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is essentially defined as a condition that affects communication and language skills which in turn, affect the integration and fulfilment of everyday activities. Consequently, people with ASD highly benefit from strategies based on systems of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Taking into consideration the role of the Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) in the interdisciplinary team of specialists responsible for implementing AAC, we are interested in finding out the way in which SLPs in Portugal apply AAC in the intervention with people with ASD. To achieve this, a quantitative study with a descriptive design was conducted by means of a questionnaire created by the researcher and filled out by Portuguese SLPs that work with ASD people– the SLPs were sourced online. The results showed that some myths regarding AAC still prevail, especially in what concerns the timing of its introduction. It is mostly utilised towards improving the communication function as well as the level of understanding and expression of the language, through low technology devices, mainly through gestures and pictogram symbols. During the assessment and implementation stage, the clinical context is the one taken into account more often, with the family being involved in the decision making as well as during the whole intervention. Refusal by the family and the time-consuming process of context commutes as well as of the construction of the material proved to be the biggest challenges when applying AAC.
