A definição de «desenvolvimento sustentável» veiculada pelo Relatório Brundtland (1987), apesar das justificações e aclarações de que foi objeto durante as últimas décadas, permite ainda um leque alargado de leituras dependentes do olhar e dos interesses de quem a procura interpretar, designadamente no que respeita ao modo como ela é incorporada na definição e na implementação de reformas de ordem política, económica e social com vista a um “outro desenvolvimento”. Sendo certo que a dependência desta noção relativamente ao ambiente cultural que a informa não permite uma definição taxativa do conceito, este artigo propõe a sua revisitação no contexto das profundas transformações de ordem social, política e económica, decorridas durante as últimas décadas para, a partir daí, aprofundar o modo como ela hoje se apresenta no discurso da disciplina da arquitetura e, consequentemente, se reflete no exercício de reabilitação do território. Conclui-se que o objetivo de integrar a agenda do «desenvolvimento sustentável» no gesto de “re habilitare”/“voltar a adequar” o território implica, não só uma reforma instrumental e metodológica do processo de «reabilitação», como uma revisão conceptual, agora mais informada na complexidade de todo o «sistema» global, formado por constituintes físicos artificiais e naturais, sociológicos, culturais e ambientais.

The definition of «sustainable development», as published in the Brundtland Report (1987), despite the justifications and explanations that it has received over the last decades, has a wide range of readings and interpretations depending on the perspective and on the interests of those who seeks to interpret it and thus on the way that this definition is reflected on the execution of political, economic and social reforms aimed at “other development”. Despite this concept’s dependence on the cultural context does not allow its restrictive definition, this article proposes to revisit it in the context of the profound social, political and economic transformations that have taken place during the last decades, hence, to deepen the way in which it is articulated with the rehabilitation issues. It is concluded that the objective of integrating the «sustainable development» concept’s agenda into the process of “re-habilitare”/”re-adapt” the territory implies not only an instrumental and methodological reform of the practice of “rehabilitation”, but also a cultural reform and a conceptual review that reflects the complexity of the whole global “system”, now understood as a set of artificial, natural, sociological, cultural, and environmental physical constituents.
