Abstract(s)
temporomandibular e 29,2% estudantes (n=31) apresentaram alguma limitação funcional.
Introduction: Functional limitations are often reported in patients with temporomandibular disorders using the Maxillary Functional Limitation Scale. Young adults, more specifically university students, due to their lifestyle, psycho-emotional changes and age group, constitute a population susceptible to the appearance of temporomandibular disorders. Objective: Cross-sectional epidemiological study with a view to assessing the association between temporomandibular disorders and maxillary functional limitations in a university students of dentristry’s sample from the Integrated Master in Dental Medicine at Universitdade Fernando Pessoa. Methodology: 106 students were evaluated for temporomandibular disorders using Axis I of the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders and classified according to the presence and absence of TMDs. The Jaw Functional Limitation Scale-8 was applied to study functional limitations. For all statistical analyzes, the level of significance was 0.05 and IBM® SPSS Statistics, version 25.0, was used. Results: 48.11% of the students (n=51) were diagnosed with some type of temporomandibular disorder and 29.2% students (n=31) had some functional limitation. In students with temporomandibular disorders, the sum of the Functional Limitation Scale was significantly higher than the students without (Mann-Whitney U test, p = 0.002). Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, there was a existence of a relationship between the presence of any type of temporomandibular disorder and functional limitations, however, further studies are needed.
