Introduction: Groin pain is a common symptom in athletes, first diagnosed by Spinelli in 1932. It is known to be a complex problem that involves a wide variety of anatomical structures. The literature suggests that groin pain has an important impact, both for athletes and their clubs, however, the prevalence of groin pain in sports is still unknown. Objective: review and summarize the existing literature on the prevalence of groin pain in athletes. Methodology: three databases and an academic search engine (PubMed, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library and Web of Science) were used to perform the search. Observational studies were included, including cohort, cross-sectional and case-control studies, including male or female athletes, reporting groin pain. Results: a total of 451 articles were identified, of which 8 were included, according to the inclusion criteria. Conclusion: the prevalence of groin pain is high in athletes practicing contact sports such as football or Australian football and low prevalence in athletes practicing non-contact sports.
