Abstract(s)
The present study explores the correlation between child abuse and juvenile delinquency by analyzing official data and self-reports. The data was collected at the Direção Geral de Reinserção e Serviços Prisionais with 55 young people with sentences, ages between 12 and 19 years old, trough a questionnaire and consulting records. This questionnaire consists of a first stage with sociodemographic data and two evaluation instruments, Scale of Antisocial and Criminal Conducts (Formiga, 2002; translated and adapted by Formiga, Duarte, Neves, Machado, & Machado, 2015) and Childhood Trauma Questionnaire – short form (Bernstein et al., 2003; translated and adapted by Calafate Ribeiro et al., 2010). From the statistics analysis it was possible to see there is a weak correlation between the official data and the Scale of Antisocial and Criminal Conducts, however it was not possible to verify any relation between the official data and the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. The self-report data shows no evidence of any correlation between abuse and deviant behavior. However, when analyzing genders separately we can see there is evidence of a link between abuse and delinquent behavior in girls only. The last purpose of this investigation was to analyze the link between different forms of abuse and the type of crime committed but it wasn’t found any significant links between the two.
