O impacto dos maus-tratos na vida das crianças e dos jovens em situação de acolhimento: estudo comparativo

Os maus-tratos em crianças e jovens constituem um sério problema social, com consequências ao nível do seu desenvolvimento, saúde física e bem-estar psicológico.
Apesar da evolução das sociedades humanas e da mudança de mentalidade, este fenómeno tem acompanhado a humanidade ao longo da história. Os profissionais que se dedicam à infância e à juventude (educadores de infância, professores, enfermeiros, médicos, assistentes sociais, etc.) desenvolvem esforços para promover percursos de vida alternativos que sejam saudáveis, dignos e adequados.
A presente investigação pretende avaliar o impacto dos maus-tratos na vida de crianças e jovens institucionalizados da região Centro de Portugal. Pretendemos perceber se existe uma relação entre o historial de maus-tratos na infância e juventude, o bem-estar psicológico e o percurso escolar destas crianças e jovens. Para tal, desenvolvemos um estudo comparativo entre dois grupos de crianças e jovens (um grupo institucionalizado e outro residente com a família).
Os resultados obtidos mostraram que não existem diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre os dois grupos no que se refere ao bem-estar psicológico. No entanto, as diferenças no percurso escolar são bastante visíveis. Os alunos institucionalizados são os que apresentam maior experiência de reprovação, assim como um maior número de reprovações ao longo do percurso escolar.
Os resultados desta investigação sugerem que as respostas académicas tradicionais não têm sido eficientes na promoção do sucesso educativo dos alunos institucionalizados o que pode agravar a sua exclusão social.
The abuse and maltreatment of children and juveniles is a serious problem for society, with reflections on child development, physical health and psychological welfare. The hostility against the children and juveniles was socially accepted in the past, but today this is no longer the case. The professionals concerned with childhood and youth struggle to promote alternative pathways of life that are healthy, worthy and appropriate. The present research intends to evaluate the impact of maltreatment on the life of institutionalized children and young people of the central region of Portugal. We intend to understand if there is a relationship between the history of maltreatment in childhood and youth, the psychological well-being and the schooling of these children and young people. To do this, we developed a comparative study between two groups of children and young (an institutionalized group and another resident with the family). The results showed that there are no statistically significant differences between the two groups regarding psychological well-being. However, the differences in schooling are very visible. Institutionalized students are those with the greatest experience of disapproval, as well as greater number of disapprovals along scholarship. The results of this research suggest that traditional academic responses have not been effective in promoting the educational success of institutionalized students, which may exacerbate their social exclusion.
